In-Town Mission Trip

In-Town Mission Trip

It is not glamourous. We do not get to stamp our passports. We will not travel to far off places. But from June 6th-10th a group of students in High-Life Ministries will drive down the road to spend five days serving our neighbors in Lincoln Village. These students and leaders will be building, demolishing, painting, mentoring, and becoming involved in the lives of complete strangers while fulfilling the Scripture’s command to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself” (Luke 10:27).

Although spending a week of Summer vacation working in the heat and sleeping on the floor of a church here in Huntsville is not initially appealing, the effects of this kind of experience have proven to soften our students’ and leaders’ hearts to continued service here in Huntsville. And in that lies the beauty of the High-Life InTown Mission. This trip seeks to expose our students to the needs that exist right here in our own city, and, more importantly, in their own hearts. Those involved with this trip will also have to come to grips with the fact that they too are very needy, and that we only serve “with the strength that God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 4:11).

Our goal in all of this is not to simply show them what need looks like, but to initiate and foster a heart of serving and sacrifice that will extend beyond the short time we serve together on this trip. We were blessed to see this first hand as a group of students after last year’s InTown Mission organized and carried out a Back To School party for the kids at the Boys and Girls Club. In another instance, one student decided to spend his senior year serving weekly at the Manna House. We praise God for both the work that is done during our time at Lincoln Village as well the continuing sanctification of our students’ hearts. We pray that this experience is not an item to check off our self-righteous “to do” list, but rather a catalyst for Kingdom Work in response to God’s grace to us.
