What first attracted you to Christianity? This is a very important question for us to answer. Think back to when you first realized that Jesus loves you, and gave his life as a ransom for yours. What was that process like for you? All of us would tell different stories I’m sure. But there would be a common theme running throughout all of our stories.
It might sound something like this; “I wasn’t too sure about all this church business, nor had I made my mind up about this Jesus guy, but I met “so and so” and they loved me unconditionally. They always accepted me, included me, and served me. And they asked for nothing in return.”
Romans 10:17 says this, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” Someone had to speak the word of Christ to you. Someone had to physically come to you, and explain what it means to trust Jesus.
There was a relationship. No one ever finds faith on their own. Or at least no one I’ve met. Faith doesn’t start or finish as a solo effort.
So back to the question. I bet each one of us could recall names and faces of those who loved us into the kingdom. For myself it was a youth minister named Allen Fortenberry. He sought me out. And it wasn’t something super human that he did. He just took initiative to build a relationship with me, and he was honest about who he was and how important Jesus was in his life. It’s that simple.
One of the wonderful perks about being part of a large congregation, like Southwood, is that there are countless opportunities available for meaningful connections with people to be made. Let me offer you one such opportunity. Southwood is hosting Andrew Peterson’s Behold the Lamb of God concert again this year. It will be on Sunday Evening, December 13th, at 7:00. We are making a certain number of tickets available at no cost to you, so that these tickets can be used as gifts. Give them to friends, neighbors, collegues, coworkers…anyone with whom you are trying to build a meaningful relationship. I was able to get several of my close friends to come last year, many of whom have quite a bit of baggage about going to church. All of them loved it, and I’ve been able to have several amazing conversations about Jesus as a direct result of the concert. It is a simple gesture that could potentially have an eternal impact. Please take the opportunity to do this. You won’t regret it!
