God’s “Will” for Southwood
Will and Christy Spink arrived Saturday, August 23 with boxes, furniture and hearts ready to minister at Southwood. Will has already heard the puns that go with his name—“God’s ‘Will’ for Southwood” —and has taken them with a wry grin and great humor as he begins his ministry as Director of Pastoral Care and Assimilation. What does that mean to the common folk of the church? Will is responsible for taking care of our folks who may be hospitalized, in a crisis or providing basic pastoral counsel. He will also be responsible for helping our visitors become acquainted with Southwood and our new members become assimilated into the church family through the new members class, service opportunities and small groups. His heart is called to minister to folks and that is what drew the search committee and staff to him. Will grew up in Memphis, TN and is the son of a PCA pastor. Christy grew up in Lexington, SC and is the daughter of teachers. Will met Christy at Clemson University where they shared RUF and ministry experiences including service at Clemson Presbyterian Church and leading small groups. Upon finishing a degree in English and philosophy, Will began working on his Masters of Divinity at Covenant Seminary in St. Louis, MO. He interned in adult ministries, outreach, pastoral care and assimilation at a local church while Christy taught high school physical science and led small groups of high school girls. Their past three months have been spent enjoying time off from studies, regrouping from the pace of seminary life and spending time with family.
What drew the Spinks to Southwood? They had heard about Southwood through folks in St. Louis and the seminary. They were drawn to the leadership and staff and how well they work together to advance the Kingdom of God. They appreciated the many ways people in the congregation serve and participate in the church’s life and each other’s lives. Christy is already part of the Thursday women’s Bible study, Morning Edition, and we hear she is a good cook. The Spinks’ current hobbies are looking for a home and being parents to Caitlyn, their 11 month daughter. Will looks forward to learning from his flock about parenting, being a godly husband, and growing in the Lord through life’s experiences. The Spinks are eager to get to know folks and begin caring for them. You will quickly be drawn to Will’s engaging smile, heart for ministering to the flock, and humor. Introduce yourselves to Will and Christy. You will be glad you did.
